Jami at-Tirmidhi 145 (Book 1, Hadith 145) #25710
The Difference between Wudu and Tayammum

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the concept of Tayammum, which is a form of ritual purification in Islam, and how it differs from Wudu.

Ikrimah narrated that : Ibn Abbas was asked about Tayammum. He said: "When Allah mentioned Wudu in His Book, He said: "So wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows". And He said about Tayammum: "And rub therewith your faces and hands" And He said: "And the male thief and the female thief; cut off their hands". So the Sunnah for cutting is the two hands. So it is only the face and the hands, meaning, Tayammum".

EXPLANATIONS:
In Islam, ritual purification or Taharah is an important part of the faith. There are two ways to achieve this state of purity; one is through wuzu or wudhu and the other is through tayammun. Both involve washing certain parts of the body with water but there are some differences between them. According to this hadith narrated by Ikrimah, Ibn Abbas explained that when Allah mentioned wuzu in His book He said to wash your face and hands up to the elbows while for tayammun He said to rub your face and hands with dust or sand instead. Furthermore, Allah also mentioned that for male thieves their hands should be cut off as punishment so according to sunnah only both hands should be cut off as punishment not just one hand like some people thought before this hadith was revealed.
