Sahih al-Bukhari 2672 (Book 52, Hadith 34) #2556
The Consequences of Dishonesty

SUMMARY: Allah will not talk to, look at, or purify from sins those who withhold water from travelers, break their pledge of allegiance for worldly gains, and take false oaths in the Name of Allah.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "There are three persons whom Allah will neither talk to nor look at, nor purify from (the sins), and they will have a painful punishment. (They are): I A man possessed superfluous water on a way and he withheld it from the travelers. II a man who gives a pledge of allegiance to a Muslim ruler and gives it only for worldly gains. If the ruler gives him what he wants, he remains obedient to It, otherwise he does not abide by it, and III a man bargains with another man after the 'Asr prayer and the latter takes a false oath in the Name of Allah) claiming that he has been offered so much for the thing and the former (believes him and) buys it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest and truthful in all your dealings with others; Keep your promises; Do not take false oaths in the Name Of Allah

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of dishonesty. It warns us that if we withhold water from travelers on a journey, break our pledge of allegiance for worldly gains or take false oaths in the Name of Allah then we will be punished by Allah and He will not talk to us nor look at us nor purify us from our sins. We should always be honest and truthful in all our dealings with others as it is one of the most important values taught by Islam. We should never make promises that we cannot keep or take an oath without being sure that it is true. If we do so then there are serious consequences which can lead to punishment from Allah.
