Sunan Abi Dawud 5224 (Book 43, Hadith 452) #25515
Humility and Forgiveness

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught us to be humble and forgiving, even when we are wronged.

Narrated Usayd ibn Hudayr,: AbdurRahman ibn AbuLayla, quoting Usayd ibn Hudayr, a man of the Ansar, said that while he was given to jesting and was talking to the people and making them laugh, the Prophet poked him under the ribs with a stick. He said: Let me take retaliation. He said: Take retaliation. He said: You are wearing a shirt but I am not. The Prophet then raised his shirt and the man embraced him and began to kiss his side. Then he said: This is what I wanted, Messenger of Allah!

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of humility and forgiveness. It tells the story of Usayd ibn Hudayr, a man from the Ansar who was known for jesting and making people laugh. One day, he was talking to people when the Prophet (ﷺ) poked him with a stick under his ribs. When Usayd asked for retaliation, the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his shirt instead of retaliating back. This gesture showed that it is better to forgive than retaliate in anger or revenge. The man then embraced him and kissed his side as an expression of gratitude for teaching this lesson in humility and forgiveness. This hadith teaches us that it is important to be humble even when we are wronged or hurt by someone else; instead of retaliating with anger or revenge, it is better to forgive them as this will bring peace into our lives rather than more conflict or hatred.
