Pride in One's Identity

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of being proud of one's identity and not to be ashamed of it.

Narrated AbuUqbah: AbdurRahman ibn AbuUqbah quoted his father AbuUqbah who was a client from the people of Persia as saying: I was present at Uhud along with the Messenger of Allah , and on smiting one of the polytheists I said: Take this from me who is the young Persian. The Messenger of Allah then turned to me and said: Why did you not say: Take this from me who is the young Ansari?
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عُقْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي عُقْبَةَ، - وَكَانَ مَوْلًى مِنْ أَهْلِ فَارِسَ - قَالَ شَهِدْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُحُدًا فَضَرَبْتُ رَجُلاً مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَقُلْتُ خُذْهَا مِنِّي وَأَنَا الْغُلاَمُ الْفَارِسِيُّ فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ فَهَلاَّ قُلْتَ خُذْهَا مِنِّي وَأَنَا الْغُلاَمُ الأَنْصَارِيُّ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being proud and not ashamed of one’s identity. It was narrated by AbuUqbah, who was a client from Persia. He was present at Uhud with the Messenger of Allah when he smote one polytheist and said “Take this from me who is the young Persian”. The Prophet then turned to him and said “Why did you not say Take this from me who is the young Ansari?” This shows that we should be proud to identify ourselves with our own people or group instead of trying to hide it or be ashamed by it. We should take pride in our heritage, culture, language, religion etc., as these are all part of our identity which makes us unique individuals in society.
