Sunan Abi Dawud 5114 (Book 43, Hadith 342) #25405
Becoming a Client Without Permission

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to become a client of any people without the permission of one's patrons.

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet (May peace be upon him) as saying : if a man becomes the client of any people without the permission of his patrons (ie those who have freed him), on him will be the curse of Allah, of angels and of all people; no obligatory or supererogatory worship will be accepted from him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek permission before taking on commitments
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abu Hurairah, teaches us that it is not permissible to become a client of any people without the permission of one's patrons. A patron is someone who has freed or released another person from slavery or servitude. Becoming a client without their permission would be considered an act of disobedience and would result in Allah’s curse, as well as the curses of angels and all people. Furthermore, no obligatory or supererogatory worship will be accepted from such an individual. This hadith serves as a reminder for us to always seek permission before taking on any commitments that may affect our relationship with our patrons.
