Seeking Guidance, Mercy and Knowledge from Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of asking Allah for guidance, mercy and knowledge.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: When the Messenger of Allah awake at night, he said: There is no god but thou, glory be to Thee, O Allah, I ask Thy pardon for my sin and I ask Thee for Thy mercy. O Allah! advance me in knowledge: do not cause my heart to deviate (from guidance) after Thou hast guided me, and grant me mercy from thyself; verily thou art the grantor.
حَدَّثَنَا حَامِدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ - قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رضى الله عنها أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَانَ إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِذَنْبِي وَأَسْأَلُكَ رَحْمَتَكَ اللَّهُمَّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا وَلاَ تُزِغْ قَلْبِي بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنِي وَهَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْوَهَّابُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin and it talks about the importance of seeking guidance, mercy and knowledge from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to pray to Allah at night for these things. He said that we should ask Him not to let our hearts deviate from His guidance after He has guided us and also ask Him for His mercy. We should remember that only God can grant us these things so we must always turn to Him in prayer. The values taught in this hadith are humility, devotion and reliance on God. It reminds us that no matter how much knowledge or success we have achieved in life, we must always seek help from God as He is the ultimate source of all blessings.
