Keeping Promises

SUMMARY: Making a promise and not fulfilling it is not a sin.

Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam: The Prophet said: When a man makes a promise to his brother with the intention of fulfilling it and does not do so, and does not come at the appointed time, he is guilty of no sin.

QUICK LESSONS:
Try your best to fulfill your promises; Communicate with others if you are unable to keep your promises; Have good intentions when making commitments/agreements; Be honest and trustworthy in all dealings with others; Strive for sincerity in all relationships .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that if we make a promise to someone, we should try our best to fulfill it. Even if we are unable to keep the promise, as long as our intention was good and sincere, then there is no sin upon us. We should always strive to be honest and trustworthy in all of our dealings with others. It is important for us to remember that when we make promises, they should be kept whenever possible. If something comes up that prevents us from keeping the promise, then it is important for us to communicate this with the other person so they know what has happened.

This hadith also teaches us about being mindful of our intentions when making promises or commitments. We should always have good intentions when making any kind of commitment or agreement with another person so that both parties can trust each other and feel secure in their relationship. It also reminds us that even if something unexpected happens which prevents one from fulfilling their promise, there will still be no sin upon them as long as their intention was sincere at the time of making the commitment or agreement.
