Sunan Abi Dawud 4982 (Book 43, Hadith 210) #25273
Utilizing the Name of Allah in Distress

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught us to use the name of Allah when we are in distress instead of cursing the devil.

Abu al-Malih reported on the authority of a man : I was riding on a mount behind the prophet (May peace be upon him). It stumbled. Thereupon I said: May the devil perish! He said: do not say; may the devil perish! For you say that, he will swell so much so that he will be like a house, and say: by my power. But say: in the name of Allah; for when you say that, he will diminish so much so that he will be like a fly.

QUICK LESSONS:
Call upon God for help using respectful language .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when we are in distress, it is important to remember to call upon Allah and not curse anyone or anything. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was riding on a mount with someone behind him when it stumbled. Instead of cursing, he advised this person to say “In the name of Allah” instead. He explained that if you curse something like Satan, he will become so powerful that he will be like a house and boast about his power. However, if you say “In the name of Allah” then Satan will become so small that he will be like a fly and have no power at all. This hadith reminds us how powerful our words can be and how important it is for us to use them wisely by calling upon Allah instead of cursing anyone or anything else.
