Sunan Abi Dawud 4969 (Book 43, Hadith 197) #25260
Compassion and Empathy of the Prophet

SUMMARY: The Prophet (May peace be upon him) showed compassion and empathy towards a young boy who was grieving the death of his pet sparrow.

Anas b. Malik said : The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) used to come to visit us. I had a younger brother who was called Abu 'Umair by Kunyah (surname). He had a sparrow with which he played, but it died. So one day the prophet (May peace be upon him) came to see him and saw him grieved. He asked: What is the matter with him? The people replied: His sparrow has died. He then said: Abu 'Umair! What has happened to the little sparrow?

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy & kindness towards others even in times of grief or sadness .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Anas b. Malik speaks to the compassion and empathy of the Prophet Muhammad (May peace be upon him). It is said that one day, he visited a young boy named Abu 'Umair who was grieving over his pet sparrow's death. Upon seeing this, the Prophet asked what had happened to Abu 'Umair's little sparrow in order to show his sympathy for the child's loss. This hadith serves as an example of how we should treat those around us with mercy and kindness even in times of grief or sadness. We should strive to show understanding and support for those who are going through difficult times just as our beloved prophet did with Abu 'Umair so many years ago.
