Sunan Abi Dawud 4962 (Book 43, Hadith 190) #25253
The Banu Salimah and Offensive Nicknames

SUMMARY: This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught the Banu Salimah to not call each other by offensive nicknames.

Narrated AbuJubayrah ibn ad-Dahhak: This verse was revealed about us, the Banu Salimah: "Nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness (to be used of one) after he has believed". He said: When the apostle of Allah came to us, every one of us had two or three names. The Messenger of Allah began to say: O so and so! But they would say: Keep silence, Messenger of Allah! He becomes angry by this name. So this verse was revealed: "Nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect and kindness when speaking with others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught a group of people called the Banu Salimah to not call each other by offensive nicknames. The verse that was revealed to them was "Nor call each other by offensive nicknames; ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness after he has believed". This means that it is wrong for believers to use names that are disrespectful or hurtful towards one another. It also teaches us that we should always show respect and kindness when speaking with others, even if we don't agree with them or like them. We should never use words or phrases that could be considered insulting or hurtful in any way. Instead, we should strive to speak kindly and respectfully at all times.
