The Consequences of Cursing

SUMMARY: Cursing something or someone has consequences and can come back to the one who uttered it.

Abu al-Darda’ reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying : when a man cures anything, the curse goes up to heaven and the gates of heaven are locked against it. Then it comes down to the earth and its gates are locked against it. Then it goes right and left, and if it finds no place of entrance it returns to the thing which was cursed, and if it finds no place of entrance it returns to the thing which was cursed, and if it deserves what was said (it enters it), otherwise it returns to the one who uttered it. Abu Dawud said : Marwan b. Muhammad said: He is Rabah b. al-Walid who heard from him (nimran). He (Marwan b. Muhammad) said: Yahya b. Hussain was confused in it.
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَسَّانَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ رَبَاحٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ نِمْرَانَ، يَذْكُرُ عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ، قَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ إِذَا لَعَنَ شَيْئًا صَعِدَتِ اللَّعْنَةُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَتُغْلَقُ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ دُونَهَا ثُمَّ تَهِبْطُ إِلَى الأَرْضِ فَتُغْلَقُ أَبْوَابُهَا دُونَهَا ثُمَّ تَأْخُذُ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالاً فَإِذَا لَمْ تَجِدْ مَسَاغًا رَجَعَتْ إِلَى الَّذِي لُعِنَ فَإِنْ كَانَ لِذَلِكَ أَهْلاً وَإِلاَّ رَجَعَتْ إِلَى قَائِلِهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ هُوَ رَبَاحُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ سَمِعَ مِنْهُ وَذَكَرَ أَنَّ يَحْيَى بْنَ حَسَّانَ وَهِمَ فِيهِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of cursing something or someone. It explains that when a person curses something, it goes up to heaven and its gates are locked against it. Then it comes down to earth and its gates are also locked against it. After that, if there is no place for entrance then the curse returns back to the one who uttered it. This hadith teaches us that we should not curse anything or anyone because whatever we say will have consequences and can come back to us in some way or another. We should think twice before saying anything bad about anyone because our words have power and they can hurt people even if we don't mean them too. We should always speak kindly and with respect towards others as this will bring blessings instead of curses into our lives.
