The Consequences of Backbiting

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the consequences of backbiting and aspersing people's honour.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet said: When I was taken up to heaven I passed by people who had nails of copper and were scratching their faces and their breasts. I said: Who are these people, Gabriel? He replied: They are those who were given to back biting and who aspersed people's honour. Abu Dawud said: Yahya b. 'Uthman has also transmitted it from Baqiyyah, there is no mention of Anas in it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind towards others, Speak positively about others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Anas ibn Malik and it talks about the consequences of backbiting and aspersing people's honour. According to this hadith, when Prophet Muhammad was taken up to heaven he saw people with nails made out of copper scratching their faces and chests. When he asked who these people were, Gabriel replied that they were those who were given to back biting and aspersing other peoples' honour. This hadith serves as a warning for us not to engage in such activities because it will lead us to severe punishment in the hereafter. We should instead focus on being kind towards others and speaking positively about them so that we can be rewarded in the afterlife instead of punished for our wrongdoings here on earth.
