Sunan Abi Dawud 4781 (Book 43, Hadith 9) #25072
Seeking Refuge from Anger

SUMMARY: The hadith is about two men who were arguing in the presence of the Prophet and one of them became angry. The Prophet then suggested a phrase to help him get rid of his anger.

Sulaiman b. Surad said: Two men reviled each other in the presence of the Prophet . Then the eyes of one of them became red and his jugular veins swelled. The Apostle of Allah said: I know a phrase by repeating which the man could get rid of the angry feelings: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil. The man said: Do you see insanity in me.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek refuge in Allah when feeling overwhelmed by anger

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about two men who were arguing in the presence of the Prophet and one of them became angry. His eyes turned red and his jugular veins swelled, which are signs that he was very angry. The Prophet then suggested a phrase to help him get rid of his anger, which was “I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil”. He asked if they thought he was insane, but this phrase can be used by anyone when they feel their anger rising so that it does not take control over them and cause harm to themselves or others around them. It is important for us to remember that we should always try our best to remain calm even when we are faced with difficult situations or people who may be trying to provoke us into getting angry. We should also remember that Allah is always there for us and can provide us with protection from any harm or evil if we turn towards Him in times of need.
