Sunan Abi Dawud 4698 (Book 42, Hadith 103) #24989
Identifying the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was advised to make a place where he could be easily identified by strangers, so that they could greet him properly.

Narrated AbuDharr and AbuHurayrah: The Messenger of Allah used to sit among his Companions. A stranger would come and not recognize him (the Prophet) until he asked (about him). So we asked the Messenger of Allah to make a place where he might take his seat so that when a stranger came, he might recognise him. So we built a terrace of soil on which he would take his seat, and we would sit beside him. He then mentioned something similar to this Hadith saying: A man came, and he described his appearance. He saluted from the side of the assembly, saying: Peace be upon you, Muhammad. The Prophet then responded to him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully greet those who are important in our lives when we meet them or hear about them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of recognizing and greeting the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is narrated by AbuDharr and AbuHurayrah that when strangers would come to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ they would not recognize him until someone asked about him. To make it easier for people to identify him, his companions built a terrace of soil on which he would take his seat. When a stranger came in after this, they were able to recognize him as soon as he saluted from the side of the assembly saying “Peace be upon you, Muhammad”. This hadith teaches us how important it is for us to recognize our beloved prophet ﷺ and greet him with respect whenever we meet or hear about him.
