Islam is a religion that requires its followers to practice five pillars in order to be considered as Muslims. These five pillars are prayer, zakat, hajj, fasting during the month of Ramadan and taking a bath on account of sexual defilement. Prayer or salah is an obligatory ritual for Muslims which involves reciting verses from the Quran while facing towards Mecca five times daily at specific times throughout the day. Zakat or zakah is an obligatory charity given by Muslims to those who are in need such as orphans and widows. Hajj or haj is an annual pilgrimage to Mecca which all able-bodied Muslims must perform at least once in their lifetime if they can afford it financially and physically. Fasting during the month of Ramadan means abstaining from food and drink from dawn until sunset for one lunar month every year; this teaches self-discipline and patience among other things. Taking a bath on account of sexual defilement means washing oneself after engaging in any kind of sexual activity with another person whether married or unmarried; this purifies oneself spiritually before engaging in worship again.
