Sunan Abi Dawud 4679 (Book 42, Hadith 84) #24970
Women's Deficiency in Reason and Religion

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that women are deficient in reason and religion compared to men, and gave examples of how this deficiency manifests itself.

'Abd Allah b. 'Umar reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: I did not see more defective in respect of reason and religion than the wise of you (women). A woman asked: What is the defect of reason and religion ? He replied: The defect of reason is the testimony of two women for one man, and the defect of faith is that one of you does not fast during Ramadan (when one is menstruating), and keep away from prayer for some days.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect differences between genders ; Recognize limitations ; Follow religious obligations even when physically limited ; Have compassion towards those with physical limitations or disabilities .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that women are deficient in reason and religion compared to men. This means that women have a lesser capacity for understanding than men, as well as a lesser capacity for faith. As an example of this deficiency, the Prophet ﷺ said that two female witnesses are required to equal one male witness when testifying in court. Additionally, he said that during menstruation, women should not fast or pray due to their physical condition at the time. These teachings show us the importance of respecting differences between genders while also recognizing the limitations of each gender’s capabilities.
