Avoiding Allegorical Interpreters of the Quran

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned against following those who interpret the Quran allegorically and advised to avoid them.

'A’ishah said: The Messenger of Allah recited this verse: "He it is who has sent down to thee the Book: in it are verses basic or fundamental . . . ". Up to "men of understanding". She said: The Messenger of Allah then said: When you see those people who follow that which is allegorical in the Quran, those are the people whom Allah has named (in the Quran). So avoid them.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek guidance from scholars for proper interpretation of Islamic teachings.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited a verse from the Quran which speaks about verses that are basic or fundamental. He then said that when one sees people who follow what is allegorical in the Quran, they should be avoided. This hadith teaches us that we should not take it upon ourselves to interpret verses of the Quran allegorically as this can lead to incorrect interpretations and beliefs. We must instead rely on scholars who have studied and understand Islamic teachings in order to gain a proper understanding of its teachings. Additionally, this hadith also teaches us about humility; we must accept our limitations in understanding certain aspects of Islam and seek guidance from those more knowledgeable than us.
