Sunan Abi Dawud 4534 (Book 41, Hadith 41) #24825
Forgiveness Over Revenge

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) was asked to take revenge for a man who was struck and wounded by Abu Jahm ibn Hudhayfah, but the Prophet (PBUH) instead offered a financial compensation and the people agreed.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Prophet sent Abu Jahm ibn Hudhayfah as a collector of zakat. A man quarrelled with him about his sadaqah (ie zakat), and Abu Jahm struck him and wounded his head. His people came to the Prophet and said: Revenge, Messenger of Allah! The Prophet said: You may have so much and so much. But they did not agree. He again said: You may have so much and so much. But they did not agree. He again said: You may have so much and so much. So they agreed. The Prophet said: I am going to address the people in the afternoon and tell them about your consent. They said: Yes. Addressing (the people), the Messenger of Allah said: These people of faith came to me asking for revenge. I presented them with so much and so much and they agreed. Do you agree? They said: #The immigrants (muhajirun) intended (to take revenge) on them. But the Messenger of Allah commanded them to refrain and they refrained. He then called them and increased (the amount), and asked: Do you agree? They replied: Yes. He said: I am going to address the people and tell them about your consent. They said: Yes. The Prophet addressed and said: Do you agree? They said: Yes.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy and compassion towards others; Try our best to resolve conflicts peacefully rather than resorting to violence or aggression; Look for ways in which we can come together in agreement and understanding; Act out of love rather than anger or hatred .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ dealt with a situation where someone had been wronged. Instead of seeking revenge, he offered financial compensation as an alternative solution. This teaches us that it is better to forgive than to seek revenge, and that we should try our best to resolve conflicts peacefully rather than resorting to violence or aggression. It also shows us that even when we are wronged, it is important not to seek retribution but instead look for ways in which we can come together in agreement and understanding. The immigrants mentioned in this hadith were those who migrated from Makkah to Madinah with the Prophet ﷺ during his Hijrah journey; they were commanded by him not to take revenge on those who wronged them despite their desire for retribution. This teaches us that even when faced with injustice or harm, it is important not to act out of anger or hatred but instead show mercy and compassion towards others as much as possible.
