Sunan Abi Dawud 4510 (Book 41, Hadith 17) #24801
Forgiveness in the Face of Poisoning

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was poisoned by a Jewess from Khaybar, but he forgave her and did not punish her. Some of his companions who ate the poisoned food died, and the Prophet had himself cupped on his shoulder as a result.

Narrated Ibn Shihab: Jabir ibn Abdullah used to say that a Jewess from the inhabitants of Khaybar poisoned a roasted sheep and presented it to the Messenger of Allah who took its foreleg and ate from it. A group of his companions also ate with him. The Messenger of Allah then said: Take your hands away (from the food). The Messenger of Allah then sent someone to the Jewess and he called her. He said to her: Have you poisoned this sheep? The Jewess replied: Who has informed you? He said: This foreleg which I have in my hand has informed me. She said: Yes. He said: What did you intend by it? She said: I thought if you were a prophet, it would not harm you; if you were not a prophet, we should rid ourselves of him (ie the Prophet). The Messenger of Allah then forgave her, and did not punish her. But some of his companions who ate it, died. The Messenger of Allah had himself cupped on his shoulder on account of that which he had eaten from the sheep. Abu Hind cupped him with the horn and knife. He was a client of Banu Bayadah from the Ansar.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy & compassion towards others , forgive those who wrong you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about an incident that happened to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A Jewess from Khaybar poisoned a roasted sheep and presented it to him. He took some of it, as did some of his companions. When he realized what had happened, he called for the woman who had done this and asked her why she had done it. She said that she wanted to see if he was truly a prophet or not - if he was, then it would not harm him; if not, then they would be rid of him. The Prophet forgave her instead of punishing her for what she did - even though some of his companions died after eating the poisoned food - showing us how important forgiveness is in Islam. He also got himself cupped on his shoulder due to eating from the sheep as well. This teaches us that we should always forgive those who wrong us no matter how difficult it may be, just like our beloved prophet did in this situation!
