Sunan Abi Dawud 4476 (Book 40, Hadith 126) #24767
No Punishment for Drinking Wine

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ did not prescribe any punishment for drinking wine and laughed when he heard about a man who had become intoxicated.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet did not prescribe any punishment for drinking wine. Ibn Abbas said: A man who had drunk wine and become intoxicated was found staggering on the road, so he was taken to the Prophet . When he was opposite al-Abbas's house, he escaped, and going in to al-Abbas, he grasped hold of him. When that was mentioned to the Prophet , he laughed and said: Did he do that? and he gave no command regarding him. Abu Dawud said: This tradition of al-Hasan b. 'Ali has been transmitted only by the people of Medina.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy towards others , Take responsibility of your own actions , Avoid making mistakes .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's reaction to a man who was found staggering on the road after drinking wine and becoming intoxicated. The Prophet did not prescribe any punishment for him and instead laughed when he heard what happened. This shows that although alcohol consumption is prohibited in Islam, it does not necessarily mean that those who consume it should be punished harshly. Instead of punishing people for their mistakes, the Prophet taught us to show mercy and compassion towards them. He also taught us to forgive those who have wronged us or made mistakes as this will lead to peace in society. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us that we should take responsibility for our own actions and try our best to avoid making mistakes in the first place.
