Sunan Abi Dawud 4444 (Book 40, Hadith 94) #24735
Throwing Pebbles and Repentance

SUMMARY: The Prophet threw a pebble at a woman and told others to do the same, but to avoid her face. He then prayed for her after she died. He also spoke about repentance.

Abu Dawud said: A similar tradition has been transmitted by Zakariya b. Salim through a different chain of narrators. This version adds: He (the Prophet) then threw a pebble like a gram at her. He then said: Throw at her and avoid her face. When se died, he took her out and prayed over her. About repentance he said similar to the tradition on Buraidah.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy by avoiding someone's face while punishing them; Pray for someone after they die if possible; Remember that everyone has the chance to repent from their sins if they are truly sorry for what they have done wrong in life; Follow laws or customs of punishment when necessary;

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's actions when he encountered a woman who had committed adultery. He threw a pebble at her, as was the custom of his time, but he instructed others to avoid her face while doing so. After she died, he took her out and prayed for her soul before speaking about repentance in similar terms as another tradition from Buraidah. This hadith teaches us that even though we may be required to punish someone for their wrongdoings according to our laws or customs, we should still show mercy by avoiding their face while punishing them and praying for them after they die if possible. We should also remember that everyone has the chance to repent from their sins if they are truly sorry for what they have done wrong in life.
