Punishment for Adultery

SUMMARY: A man confessed to committing fornication and was stoned to death as punishment, but the Prophet did not pray over him.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Ma'iz ibn Malik came to the Prophet and said that he had committed fornication and he (the Prophet) turned away from him. He repeated it many times, but he (the Prophet) turned away from him. He asked his people: Is he mad? They replied: There is no defect in him. He asked: Have you done it with her? He replied: Yes. so he ordered that he should be stoned to death. He was taken out and stoned to death, and he (the Prophet) did not pray over him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek forgiveness from Allah through prayer & repentance

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man named Ma'iz ibn Malik who committed a sin known as zina, or fornication. He came to the Prophet and confessed his wrong-doing, but the Prophet turned away from him. His people asked if he was mad, but they said there was no defect in him. The Prophet asked if he had done it with her and Ma'iz replied yes. As a result of this confession, the Prophet ordered that he should be stoned to death as punishment for his crime. He was taken out and stoned until he died, however the Prophet did not pray over him after his death. This hadith teaches us that adultery is a serious crime which has severe consequences; it also shows us that even though we may have committed wrong-doings in our lives we should still seek forgiveness from Allah through prayer and repentance so that we can be forgiven by Him instead of facing harsh punishments like this man did in this story.
