Sunan Abi Dawud 4418 (Book 40, Hadith 68) #24709
The Obligation of Stoning in Islam

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of stoning as a punishment for married men and women who commit adultery, and how it is an obligation from Allah.

'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas said: 'Umar b. al-Khattab gave an address saying: Allah sent Muhammad with truth and sent down the Books of him, and the verse of stoning was included in what He sent down to him. We read it and memorized it. The Messenger of Allah had people stoned to death and we have done it also since his death. I am afraid the people might say with the passage of time: We do not find the verse of stoning in the Books of Allah, and thus they stray by abandoning a duty which Allah had received. Stoning is a duty laid down (by Allah) for married men and women who commit fornication when proof is established, or if there is pregnancy, or a confession. I swear by Allah, had it not been so that the people might say: 'Umar made an addition to Allah’s Book, I would have written it (there).

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic laws even if we don't understand them fully or can't find them in scripture because they are still obligations from God Himself .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of stoning as a punishment for married men and women who commit adultery, which is an obligation from Allah. It was narrated by 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas that Umar al-Khattab gave an address saying that when Muhammad was sent with truth, the verse of stoning was included in what He sent down to him. The Messenger of Allah had people stoned to death and this practice continued after his death. Umar feared that people might stray away from this duty if they could not find the verse in the Books of Allah, so he swore by God that he would have written it there if it weren't for people thinking he added something to God's Book himself. This hadith teaches us about the importance of following Islamic laws even if we don't understand them fully or can't find them in scripture because they are still obligations from God Himself.
