Sunan Abi Dawud 4271 (Book 37, Hadith 32) #24561
Killing During Times of Commotion

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the meaning of a phrase used in a previous tradition, which refers to people who fight during times of commotion and kill others without seeking forgiveness from Allah.

Khalid b. Dihqan said: I asked Yahya b. Yahya al-Ghassani about the word i'tabata bi qatlihi spoken by him (as mentioned in the previous tradition). He said: It means those people who fight during the period of commotion (fitnah), and one of them kills (the other people) presuming that he is in the right, so he does not beg pardon of Allah of that (sin). Abu Dawud said: And he said: The word fa'tabata means "he shed blood profusely"

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek forgiveness from Allah for any wrongdoings or sins committed during times of conflict or commotions .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the meaning of a phrase used in a previous tradition, which refers to people who fight during times of commotion and kill others without seeking forgiveness from Allah. The narrator Khalid b. Dihqan asked Yahya b. Yahya al-Ghassani about the phrase i'tabata bi qatlihi, which means those people who fight during periods of commotion and one kills another presuming that he is in the right but does not seek forgiveness from Allah for his sin. Abu Dawud further explained that this phrase also means "shedding blood profusely". This hadith teaches us that even if we are fighting for what we believe is right, it is important to seek forgiveness from Allah for any wrongdoings or sins committed during such times as it is only He who can forgive us our sins and grant us mercy.
