The Prophet's Lifestyle of Sustenance

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (ﷺ) lifestyle and how he and his family sustained themselves with dates, water, and milk from their neighbors.

Narrated 'Urwa: Aisha said to me, "O my nephew! We used to see the crescent, and then the crescent and then the crescent in this way we saw three crescents in two months and no fire (for cooking) used to be made in the houses of Allah's Messenger . I said, "O my aunt! Then what use to sustain you?" 'Aisha said, "The two black things: dates and water, our neighbors from Ansar had some Manarh and they used to present Allah's Messenger some of their milk and he used to make us drink".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the lifestyle of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It explains that during certain months they would see three crescents in two months which meant that no fire was made in their homes for cooking. To sustain themselves they relied on dates and water as well as milk from their Ansari neighbors. This hadith teaches us about the simplicity of the prophet’s life and how he relied on Allah for sustenance even when times were difficult. It also shows us how generous his neighbors were to him by providing him with milk when needed. We can learn from this example to be generous to our own neighbors in times of need as well as rely on Allah for sustenance even when we are struggling financially or otherwise.
