Sunan Abi Dawud 4245 (Book 37, Hadith 6) #24535
The Use of Sword and Its Remnant

SUMMARY: This hadith talks about the use of sword and the remnant that will be spared after its use, as well as an illusory truce.

The traditions mentioned above has also been transmitted by Khalid b. Khalid al-Yashkuri through different chain of narrators. This version has: I (Hudhaifah) asked : Will any be spared after the use of the sword ? He replied: There will be remnant with specks in its eye and an illusory truce. He then transmitted the rest of the tradition. Qatadah applied this to the apostasy during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr. The word aqdha' (sing. qadhan) means specks, hudnah means truce and dakhan means malice.

QUICK LESSONS:
Avoid taking part in any kind of violence or destruction if it can be avoided

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the use of sword in a battle or war, and what will remain after its usage. It is said that Qatadah applied this to the apostasy during Abu Bakr's caliphate. The word aqdha' means specks, hudnah means truce and dakhan means malice. This hadith teaches us that even though there may be destruction caused by war or battles, there will still be some remnant left behind with specks in its eye, as well as an illusory truce which could mean peace between two sides for a short period of time before another battle begins again. We can also learn from this hadith that we should not take part in any kind of violence or destruction if it can be avoided because it can cause more harm than good in the long run.
