The Importance of Freeing Slaves

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of freeing slaves and how it should not be hindered by any conditions set by the slave's masters.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: Aisha wanted to buy a slave-girl in order to manumit her. The girl's masters stipulated that her Wala' would be for them. Allah's Messenger said (to 'Aisha), "What they stipulate should not stop you, for the Wala' is for the liberator".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of freeing slaves, which was a common practice in pre-Islamic Arabia. It is narrated that Aisha wanted to buy a slave-girl in order to manumit her, but her masters stipulated that her Wala’ would be for them. In response, Allah’s Messenger said that this should not stop Aisha from freeing the girl as the Wala’ belongs to the liberator. This hadith teaches us that we should prioritize freedom over any other condition or benefit when it comes to slavery and manumission. It also shows us how important it is for us as Muslims to free slaves whenever possible and ensure their rights are respected even after they have been freed.
