Dyeing Hair with Henna

SUMMARY: The hadith is about dyeing hair with henna and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) disliked its odour.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: Karimah, daughter of Hammam, told that a woman came to Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) and asked her about dyeing with henna. She replied: There is no harm, but I do not like it. My beloved, the Messenger of Allah , disliked its odour. Abu Dawud said: She meant the colour of hair of the head.
حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي كَرِيمَةُ بِنْتُ هَمَّامٍ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً، أَتَتْ عَائِشَةَ - رضى الله عنها - فَسَأَلَتْهَا عَنْ خِضَابِ الْحِنَّاءِ فَقَالَتْ لاَ بَأْسَ بِهِ وَلَكِنِّي أَكْرَهُهُ كَانَ حَبِيبِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يَكْرَهُ رِيحَهُ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ تَعْنِي خِضَابَ شَعْرِ الرَّأْسِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about dyeing hair with henna. It was narrated by Aisha Ummul Mu'minin who was a wife of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She said that a woman asked her if it was permissible to dye her hair with henna and she replied that there is no harm in doing so but she personally did not like it because the Prophet Muhammad disliked its odour. Abu Dawud added that she meant the colour of hair on one's head. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our actions and to follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad as much as possible. We should also be aware that although something may be permissible according to Islamic law, we should still consider whether or not it would please Allah SWT before engaging in such an activity.
