Sunan Abi Dawud 4157 (Book 34, Hadith 138) #24447
Angels and Dogs

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ was visited by Gabriel (peace be upon him) who informed him that angels do not enter a house which contains a dog or a picture. The Prophet ﷺ then ordered to kill dogs, except for the one guarding the big orchard.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Maimunah, wife of the Prophet reported him as saying: Gabriel (peace be upon him) promised to visit me last night, but he did not visit me. Then it occurred to him that there was a pup under his bed. So he ordered and it was turned out. He then got water in his hand and sprinkled it on its place. When Gabriel met him, he said: We do not enter a house which contains a dog or a picture. When the morning came, the Prophet ordered to kill dogs. He ordered to kill the dog which guarded a small orchard, and left the dog which guarded the big orchard.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how angels do not enter a house which contains either a dog or a picture. It is narrated by Ibn 'Abbas and Maimunah, wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. According to this hadith, when Gabriel visited the Prophet ﷺ he noticed there was a pup under his bed so he ordered it to be taken out before he could enter. After this incident, in the morning time, the Prophet ﷺ ordered for all dogs to be killed except for those guarding large orchards as they were useful in protecting them from thieves and robbers. This hadith teaches us that we should keep our homes clean from any kind of impurity such as animals or pictures as it can prevent angels from entering our homes. We should also take care of animals but at times they can cause harm so we must take necessary precautions when needed.
