Sunan Abi Dawud 4119 (Book 34, Hadith 100) #24409
Length of Garments for Women in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) allowed the wives of the Prophet to wear their garments a certain length, and then increased it when they asked.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Messenger of Allah gave licence to the Mothers of the believers (ie the wives of the Prophet) to hang down their lower garment a span. Then they asked him to increase it, and he increased one span for them. They would send (the garment) to us and we would measure it one forearm's length for them.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings on clothing for women with modesty and respect.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the clothing that women should wear according to Islamic law. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave permission to his wives to hang down their lower garment a span, which was later increased by one span when they asked him. This means that women are allowed to wear garments that reach up until one forearm's length from the ground. This hadith teaches us that modesty is important in Islam and it also shows us how kind and generous the Prophet was towards his wives. He listened carefully to their requests and granted them what they wanted as long as it did not go against Islamic teachings.
