Sunan Abi Dawud 4104 (Book 34, Hadith 85) #24394
Appropriate Dress for Women

SUMMARY: It is not appropriate for a woman to show her body parts except her face and hands when she reaches the age of menstruation.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: Asma, daughter of AbuBakr, entered upon the Messenger of Allah wearing thin clothes. The Messenger of Allah turned his attention from her. He said: O Asma', when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and he pointed to his face and hands. Abu Dawud said: This is a mursal tradition (ie the narrator who transmitted it from 'Aishah is missing) Khalid b. Duraik did not see 'Aishah.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of modesty and appropriateness in dress for women. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was speaking to Asma', daughter of Abu Bakr, when he said that once a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it is not suitable for her to display any part of her body except her face and hands. This hadith teaches us that modesty should be observed by all women regardless of their age or marital status. It also serves as a reminder that we should always strive to dress modestly in order to maintain our dignity and respectability as Muslims. Furthermore, this hadith encourages us to be mindful about how we present ourselves in public so as not to draw unnecessary attention or cause offense.
