Modesty and Concealment When Washing

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that one should be modest and conceal themselves when washing in public.

Narrated Ya'la: The Messenger of Allah saw a man washing in a public place without a lower garment. So he mounted the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah and said: Allah is characterized by modesty and concealment. So when any of you washes, he should conceal himself.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ الْعَرْزَمِيِّ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ يَعْلَى، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ رَأَى رَجُلاً يَغْتَسِلُ بِالْبَرَازِ بِلاَ إِزَارٍ فَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ حَيِيٌّ سِتِّيرٌ يُحِبُّ الْحَيَاءَ وَالسَّتْرَ فَإِذَا اغْتَسَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَسْتَتِرْ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ya'la ibn Umayyah tells us about the importance of modesty and concealment when washing in public. This is a teaching from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He saw a man washing without a lower garment in a public place and so he mounted the pulpit to teach people about modesty. He praised Allah for His characteristic of modesty and concealment. He then said that when any of us washes, we should make sure to conceal ourselves. This hadith teaches us that we should always be modest no matter what we are doing or where we are doing it. We must also make sure to cover ourselves up properly so as not to offend anyone or draw attention to ourselves unnecessarily. It is important for us to remember this teaching from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as it will help us lead more dignified lives which will ultimately bring peace and harmony into our lives as well as those around us.
