Sunan Abi Dawud 3800 (Book 28, Hadith 65) #24090
What Allah Made Lawful and Unlawful

SUMMARY: Allah sent down His Book to make certain things lawful and others unlawful, and what He said nothing about is allowable.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The people of pre-Islamic times used to eat some things and leave others alone, considering them unclean. Then Allah sent His Prophet and sent down His Book, marking some things lawful and others unlawful; so what He made lawful is lawful, what he made unlawful is unlawful, and what he said nothing about is allowable. And he recited: "Say: I find not in the message received by me by inspiration any (meat) forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it".. up to the end of the verse.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow divine laws set by Allah in the Quran

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of following the laws set by Allah in the Quran. It explains that before Islam, people used to eat some things and leave others alone, considering them unclean. However, when Allah sent His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and revealed His Book, He made certain things lawful and others unlawful. The hadith also recites a verse from the Quran which states that whatever is not forbidden by God can be eaten by those who wish to do so. This teaches us that we should only follow what has been made permissible or prohibited by God in the Quran; anything else is up to our own discretion as long as it does not go against Islamic teachings.
