Sunan Abi Dawud 3795 (Book 28, Hadith 60) #24085
Transformation of the Children of Israel

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was presented with a roasted lizard and he used it as an opportunity to teach about the Children of Israel being transformed into animals.

Narrated Thabit ibn Wadi'ah: We were in an army with the Messenger of Allah . We got some lizards. I roasted one lizard and brought it to the Messenger of Allah and placed it before him. He took a stick and counted its fingers. He then said: A group from the children of Isra'il was transformed into an animal of the land, and I do not know which animal it was. He did not eat it nor did he forbid (its eating).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind to all creatures no matter how small or insignificant they may seem .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the transformation of a group from the children of Isra'il into an animal. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was presented with a roasted lizard and he used it as an opportunity to teach about this story. He counted its fingers and said that this could be one of those animals that were transformed from humans. He neither ate it nor forbade its eating, which shows us his mercy and kindness towards all creatures, even those that are considered unclean in Islam. This hadith teaches us to be kind to all creatures, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem, because Allah has created them for a purpose. It also teaches us not to judge people based on their appearance or background but rather look at their character and deeds instead.
