Sunan Abi Dawud 3759 (Book 28, Hadith 24) #24049
Eating Before Night Prayer

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar is warning Abbad ibn Abdullah about not taking the evening meal too close to the night prayer.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: Abdullah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Umayr said: I was with my father in the time of Ibn az-Zubayr sitting beside Abdullah ibn Umar. Then Abbad ibn Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr said: We have heard that the evening meal is taken just before the night prayer. Thereupon Abdullah ibn Umar said: Woe to you! what was their evening meal? Do you think it was like the meal of your father?

QUICK LESSONS:
Eat your evening meal at least an hour before you pray your night prayer.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is a reminder from Abdullah Ibn Umar to Abbad Ibn Abdullah about eating before night prayer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that it is important to eat at the right time, and this hadith serves as a reminder of that teaching. It is important for Muslims to eat their evening meal before they pray their night prayer, so they have enough energy for worshiping Allah SWT. Eating too close to the night prayer can make it difficult for one to concentrate on their prayers, so it's best if one eats earlier in order for them to be able to focus on their prayers without any distractions or disturbances. This hadith also teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions and take care not do anything which may disrupt our worship of Allah SWT.
