Sunan Abi Dawud 3755 (Book 28, Hadith 20) #24045
Decorations and Prophets

SUMMARY: It is not fitting for a Prophet to enter a house which is decorated.

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib: Safinah AbuAbdurRahman said that a man prepared food for Ali ibn AbuTalib who was his guest, and Fatimah said: I wish we had invited the Messenger of Allah and he had eaten with us. They invited him, and when he came he put his hands on the side-ports of the door, but when he saw the figured curtain which had been put at the end of the house, he went away. So Fatimah said to Ali: Follow him and see what turned him back. I (Ali) followed him and asked: What turned you back, Messenger of Allah? He replied: It is not fitting for me or for any Prophet to enter a house which is decorated.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect towards prophets at all times

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the respect that should be given to Prophets. The story begins with Ali ibn AbuTalib being invited as a guest to someone's home. His daughter Fatimah wished that the Messenger of Allah was also invited so he could eat with them. When the Messenger of Allah arrived at the house he noticed that it was decorated and decided not to enter because it would not be respectful for him or any other prophet to enter such a place. This hadith teaches us that we should always show respect towards prophets and avoid decorating our homes in an excessive manner as this can be seen as disrespectful. We should also remember that prophets are people who have been chosen by God and they deserve our utmost respect at all times.
