Refusing an Invitation

SUMMARY: A man was invited to a gathering three times, but he refused the invitation and threw pebbles at the messenger.

Qatadah reported this story from Sa’id b. al-Musayyab. This version adds: When he was invited on the third day, he did not accept but threw pebbles on the messenger.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be respectful when declining an invitation
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about a man who was invited to a gathering three times, but he refused the invitation and threw pebbles at the messenger instead. This teaches us that it is important to be respectful when declining an invitation, even if we do not wish to attend. We should not be rude or disrespectful in our refusal as this can hurt someone's feelings and make them feel unwelcome or unimportant. Instead of throwing pebbles at someone who has extended an invitation, we should politely decline with gratitude for being thought of in the first place.
