Sunan Abi Dawud 3745 (Book 28, Hadith 10) #24035
Wedding Feasts in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that it is a duty to have a wedding feast on the first day, a good practice to have one on the second day, and not necessary to have one on the third day.

Narrated Zubayr ibn Uthman: The Prophet said: The wedding feast on the first day is a duty, that on the second is a good practice, but that on the third day is to make men hear of it and show it to them. Qatadah said: A man told me that Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab was invited (to a wedding feast on the first day and he accepted it. He was again invited on the second day, and he accepted. When he was invited on the third day, he did not accept; he said: They are the people who make men hear of it and show it to them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about wedding feasts in Islam. According to this hadith, it is a duty for Muslims to host a wedding feast on the first day of marriage. It is also considered as good practice or Sunnah for Muslims to host another feast on the second day of marriage. However, there is no obligation or Fardh for Muslims to host another feast after that. This hadith also teaches us about moderation and avoiding extravagance when celebrating weddings. We should remember that we are not obligated by Islamic law beyond hosting two feasts and should avoid going overboard with our celebrations out of respect for our religion and its teachings.
