Covering Drinks for the Prophet (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) was offered a drink and he asked that it be covered, even with a piece of wood.

Jabir said: We were with Prophet and he asked for something to drink. A man from the company asked: Should we not give you nabidh (drink made from dates) to drink ? He replied : Yes . The man went quickly and bought a cup of nabidh. The Messenger of Allah said: Why did you not cover it up even by putting a piece of wood on it ? Abu Dawud said: Al-Asma'i's version has: "You put it on it"..

QUICK LESSONS:
Offer drinks with respect and reverence by covering them properly before presenting them to someone else .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of covering drinks when offering them to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this hadith, Jabir reported that they were with the Prophet ﷺ and he asked for something to drink. A man from their company offered him nabidh, which is a type of drink made from dates. The man went quickly to buy it but did not cover it up before bringing it back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then asked why he did not cover it up even by putting a piece of wood on top of it. This shows us how important respect and reverence are when offering something to the Prophet ﷺ, as we should always make sure that whatever we offer him is properly covered or protected in some way.
