Fighting Intoxication

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised against the consumption of intoxicating liquor and suggested that it should be fought against if people do not abandon it.

Narrated Daylam al-Himyari: I asked the Prophet and said: Messenger of Allah! we live in a cold land in which we do heavy work and we make a liquor from wheat to get strength from if for our work and to stand the cold of our country. He asked: Is it intoxicating? I replied: Yes. He said: You must avoid it. I said: The people will not abandon it. He said: If they do not abandon it, fight with them.

QUICK LESSONS:
Avoid intoxication and taking action against those who consume or produce intoxicants even if they are unwilling to stop doing so themselves .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's advice on intoxication. He was asked by Daylam al-Himyari about a liquor made from wheat which was used to get strength for work and to stand the cold of their country. The Prophet asked if it was intoxicating and when he received an affirmative answer, he advised them to avoid it. When they said that people would not abandon it, he suggested that they fight with them if they do not abandon it. This hadith teaches us that intoxication is something we must avoid as Muslims and also suggests that we should take action against those who consume or produce intoxicants even if they are unwilling to stop doing so themselves. It also shows us how important our faith is in guiding our actions even in difficult situations such as this one where people were using a substance for practical purposes but were still encouraged to abstain from consuming or producing anything which could lead them astray from their faith.
