Sunan Abi Dawud 3637 (Book 25, Hadith 67) #23927
Fairness and Justice in Dealing with Others

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught us to be fair and just in our dealings with others, even if they are not related to us.

Narrated Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr: A man disputed with az-Zubayr about streamlets in the lava plain which was irrigated by them. The Ansari said: Release the water and let it run, but az-Zubayr refused. The Holy Prophet said to az-Zubayr: Water (your ground), Zubayr, then let the water run to your neighbour. The Ansari then became angry and said: Messenger of Allah! it is because he is your cousin! Thereupon the face of the Messenger of Allah changed colour and he said: Water (your ground), then keep back the water till it returns to the embankment. Az-Zubayr said: By Allah! I think this verse came down about that: "But no , by thy Lord! they can have no (real) faith, until they make thee judge"..

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for fairness & justice when dealing with others regardless of whether or not they are related to you or not; Treat everyone fairly according to Islamic teachings on justice such as adl & qisas .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of fairness and justice when dealing with others. It was narrated by Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr who reported a dispute between him and an Ansari man about streamlets in the lava plain which was irrigated by them. The Ansari said that the water should be released so it can run but az-Zubayr refused. The Prophet (PBUH) then told az-Zubayr to water his ground first before releasing the water so it can reach his neighbour's land as well. When the Ansari became angry because of this, he said that it was because he was related to the Prophet (PBUH). At this point, the face of the Prophet changed colour and he repeated his command for fairness and justice for all parties involved. Az-Zubayr then quoted a verse from Quran which talks about how faith cannot be achieved until one makes Allah their judge in matters such as these. This hadith teaches us that we must always strive for fairness and justice when dealing with others regardless of whether or not they are related to us or not; we must make sure that everyone is treated fairly according to Islamic teachings on justice such as adl (fairness) and qisas (retaliation).
