Sunan Abi Dawud 3607 (Book 25, Hadith 37) #23897
Bearing Witness for Truth

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ bought a horse from a Bedouin and when the Bedouin was about to sell it to someone else, Khuzaymah ibn Thabit bore witness that the Prophet ﷺ had already bought it.

Narrated Uncle of Umarah ibn Khuzaymah: The Prophet bought a horse from a Bedouin. The Prophet took him with him to pay him the price of his horse. The Messenger of Allah walked quickly and the Bedouin walked slowly. The people stopped the Bedouin and began to bargain with him for the horse as and they did not know that the Prophet had bought it. The Bedouin called the Messenger of Allah saying: If you want this horse, (then buy it), otherwise I shall sell it. The Prophet stopped when he heard the call of the Bedouin, and said: Have I not bought it from you? The Bedouin said: I swear by Allah, I have not sold it to you. The Prophet said: Yes, I have bought it from you. The Bedouin began to say: Bring a witness. Khuzaymah ibn Thabit then said: I bear witness that you have bought it. The Prophet turned to Khuzaymah and said: On what (grounds) do you bear witness? He said: By considering you trustworthy, Messenger of Allah ! The Prophet made the witness of Khuzaymah equivalent to the witness of two people.

QUICK LESSONS:
Bear witness for truth even if you don't have any physical evidence or proof .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about bearing witness for truth and trustworthiness. It tells us how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ bought a horse from a Bedouin but when he was paying him, some people stopped the Bedouin and began bargaining with him as they did not know that the Prophet ﷺ had already purchased it. The Bedouin called out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking if he wanted to buy it or not. When he heard this, he stopped and said that he had already purchased it from him. The Bedouin then asked for witnesses so Khuzaymah ibn Thabit stepped forward and testified on behalf of the Prophet ﷺ based on his trustworthiness alone without any other evidence or proof. As an appreciation of his testimony, Allah made his witness equivalent to two people's testimony in court cases. This teaches us that we should always bear witness for truth no matter what even if we don't have any physical evidence or proof because Allah will reward us greatly for our honesty and trustworthiness in such matters.
