Sahih al-Bukhari 2491 (Book 47, Hadith 9) #2386
Manumitting Jointly Possessed Slaves

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that if a jointly possessed slave is manumitted by one of the owners, and the other owners can afford to pay for their share of the slave, then the slave will be completely manumitted.

Narrated Nafi': Ibn 'Umar said, "Allah's Messenger said, 'If one manumits his share of a jointly possessed slave, and can afford the price of the other shares according to the adequate price of the slave, the slave will be completely manumitted; otherwise he will be partially manumitted'. " (Aiyub, a sub-narrator is not sure whether the saying " . otherwise he will be partially manumitted" was said by Nafi' or the Prophet)

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive towards freeing slaves whenever possible .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about how to go about manumitting a jointly possessed slave. The Prophet (ﷺ) said that if one owner decides to free their share of a jointly owned slave, then all other owners must be able to afford paying for their share in order for the entire slave to be freed. If they cannot afford it, then only part of the slave will be freed. This hadith teaches us that we should strive towards freeing slaves whenever possible and not let financial constraints stand in our way when it comes to doing good deeds. It also shows us how important it is for people who own slaves together to work together in order for them all to benefit from freeing them.
