Sunan Abi Dawud 3469 (Book 24, Hadith 54) #23759
Charity and Debt Relief

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to give charity to those in need and not take more than what is necessary.

Narrated Abu Sa’id Al Khudri : In the time of the Messenger of Allah a man suffered loss affecting fruits he had bought and owed a large debt, so the Messenger of Allah said: Give him sadaqah (alms). So the people gave him sadaqah (alms), but as that was not enough to pay the debt in full, the Messenger of Allah said: Take what you find. But that is all you may have.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of charity and debt relief. It was narrated by Abu Said Al Khudri that during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), a man suffered a loss affecting his fruits he had bought and owed a large debt. In response, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to give him sadaqah or charity as an act of kindness. However, when it became clear that this was not enough to pay off his debt in full, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that he could take what he found but no more than that. This hadith teaches us about being generous with our wealth and helping those who are in need without taking advantage of them or taking more than we should from them. It also encourages us to be mindful about how we use our money so as not to get into too much debt ourselves.
