Sahih al-Bukhari 2477 (Book 46, Hadith 38) #2372
Cooking Donkey Meat

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) saw people cooking the meat of donkeys and instructed them to break the pots and throw away their contents, or wash them if they preferred.

Narrated Salama bin Al-Akwa': On the day of Khaibar the Prophet saw fires being lighted. He asked, "Why are these fires being lighted?" The people replied that they were cooking the meat of donkeys. He said, "Break the pots and throw away their contents". The people said, "Shall we throw away their contents and wash the pots (rather than break them)?" He said, "Wash them".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for animals, Proper disposal of non-permissible food items, Kindness towards all living creatures .

EXPLANATIONS:
On the day of Khaibar, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw people cooking donkey meat. He asked why they were doing this and was told that it was for food. He then instructed them to either break the pots and throw away their contents or wash them instead. This hadith teaches us that we should not eat certain types of animals, such as donkeys, as it is not permissible in Islam. We should also be mindful of our actions when preparing food; if something is not permissible to eat then we should dispose of it properly rather than just throwing it away carelessly. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us about being respectful towards animals; even though eating donkey meat is forbidden in Islam, we are still encouraged to treat these animals with kindness by washing the pots rather than breaking them unnecessarily.
