Atonement of Vows and Oaths

SUMMARY: The atonement for a vow is the same as for an oath.

Narrated 'Uqbah bin 'Amir: The Messenger of Allah as saying: The atonement for a vow is the same as for an oath. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has also been transmitted by 'Amr b. al-Harith from Ka'b b. 'Alqamah, from Ibn Shamasah on the authority of 'Uqbah.

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep your promises and vows made to Allah; Make up for broken promises through atonements; Respect your words; Be honest in all matters related to religion; Do good deeds even after making mistakes; Have faith in God's mercy and forgiveness.
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that the atonement for a vow is the same as for an oath. A vow is when someone makes a promise to Allah to do something or not do something in exchange of some reward from Allah. An oath is when someone swears by Allah or His creation that they will do something or not do something. In both cases, if one fails to fulfill their promise then they must make up for it with an atonement which can be done by feeding ten poor people, clothing them or freeing a slave. This hadith teaches us that we should always keep our promises and if we fail to fulfill them then we should make up for it with an atonement so that our relationship with Allah remains strong and pure.
