Sunan Abi Dawud 3310 (Book 22, Hadith 69) #23600
Paying Debts to Allah

SUMMARY: Fulfilling the obligations of a deceased person is encouraged by the Prophet.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: A woman came to the Prophet and said (to him) that one month's fast was due from her mother who had died. May I fulfill them on her behalf? He asked: Suppose some debt was due from your mother, would you pay it ? She replied: Yes. He said: So the debt due to Allah is the one which most deserves to be paid.

QUICK LESSONS:
Fulfill our obligations even after death

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abbas tells us that if someone has passed away, their obligations should still be fulfilled. In this case, a woman came to the Prophet and asked if she could fulfill her mother's one month fast on her behalf. The Prophet asked her if she would pay any debt that was due from her mother and when she said yes, he replied that the debt due to Allah is most deserving of being paid. This hadith teaches us that we should fulfill our obligations even after death as it is an important part of our faith and relationship with Allah. We must also remember to pay back any debts we owe in order for us to be good Muslims and maintain a healthy relationship with God.
