Sunan Abi Dawud 3301 (Book 22, Hadith 60) #23591
Walking in Vow is Not Necessary

SUMMARY: The Prophet saw a man walking with his sons and asked about him. He was told that the man had taken a vow to walk on foot, but the Prophet said that Allah does not need people to punish themselves and ordered him to ride instead.

Narrated Anas b. Malik : The Messenger of Allah saw a man that he was supported between his sons. He asked about him, and (the people) said: He has taken a vow to walk (on foot). Thereupon he said: Allah has no need that this man should punish himself, and he ordered him to ride. Abu Dawud said: 'Amr b. Abi 'Amir has also narrated a similar tradition from al-A'raj on the authority of Abu Hurairah from the Prophet .

QUICK LESSONS:
Be careful before making vows ; Follow Islamic teachings ; Avoid excessive acts of piety ; Understand what is necessary for faith .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how taking a vow can be unnecessary if it involves punishing oneself. The Prophet saw a man walking with his sons and asked about him. He was told that the man had taken a vow to walk on foot as punishment for something he did wrong or as an act of worship towards Allah. However, the Prophet said that Allah does not need people to punish themselves in this way and ordered him to ride instead so he could fulfill his vow without having to suffer unnecessarily. This teaches us that we should be careful when making vows because they can have serious consequences if we are unable to fulfill them or if they involve punishing ourselves in any way which is unnecessary or excessive according to Islamic teachings. We should also remember that Allah does not require us to do anything more than what is necessary for our faith; anything beyond this may be considered an act of piety but it will not necessarily bring us closer towards Him or increase our reward in Heaven unless it has been prescribed by Him through His teachings or His Messenger's Sunnah.
