Sunan Abi Dawud 3290 (Book 22, Hadith 49) #23580
The Consequences of Vowing Wrongdoing

SUMMARY: Making a vow to do something wrong is as bad as taking an oath and requires the same atonement.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Prophet as saying: No vow must be taken to do an act of disobedience, and the atonement for it is the same as for an oath.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest and responsible with your words and promises.
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that making a vow to do something wrong is just as bad as taking an oath. It is important to be careful with our words and not make promises we cannot keep or that are against the teachings of Islam. If we make such a vow, then we must atone for it in the same way that one would for an oath. This means that if someone makes a promise they cannot keep, they must still fulfill it or else face consequences from Allah SWT.
