Attending Funerals with Respect

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) attended the funeral of a man from the Ansar and sat facing the qiblah while waiting for the grave to be dug.

Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib: We went out with the Messenger of Allah to the funeral of a man of the Ansar, but when we reached the grave, the niche in the side had not yet been made, so the Prophet sat down facing the qiblah, and we sat down along with him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Attend funerals with respect and patience; Face towards qiblal during prayer/worship/funerals; Show respect at all times; Follow Islamic teachings in all aspects of life.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of attending funerals with respect. It is narrated by Al-Bara' ibn Azib that he and other companions went out with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to attend a funeral of one of their Ansari friends. When they reached, they found that the grave was not yet dug, so they all sat down facing towards qiblah in order to wait for it to be completed. This shows us how important it is to show respect when attending funerals, even if we have to wait for some time before proceeding further. We should also remember that we should always face towards qiblal when sitting or standing during any kind of prayer or worship, including funerals.
